Ten Favorite Funny Women
4. Mindy Kaling
Historically, successful female comedy writers do not wear Herve Leger. They aren’t loud and sincere about their love for cheesy romantic comedies from the 1990s. They don’t hang out with LA hipster-socialite types or tweet about their crushes on Robert Downey Jr. or solicit workout playlists from fans. But Kaling isn’t a traditional “lady comedy writer.” She’s more like your imaginary best friend: aspirational yet approachable, the kind of chick with whom you want to shop, get frozen yogurt, and see Water for Elephants. She’s not raunchy or self-deprecating or surrealist, just intelligent and honest — and more importantly, she’s living proof that you don’t have to play down your femininity to make it in comedy. Rather than emphasizing how she’s “just one of the guys,” Kaling is a girl in a boy’s club who doesn’t tiptoe around her girliness. She’s refreshing and all-around awesome.

JACK: Do you believe in magic?
KAREN: I do!
JACK: In a young girl’s heart? Music can free her whenever it starts. Magic. And it’s starting right now.
KAREN: Good, ‘cause I don’t think I can wait any longer for some of that old Jack Daniels!
JACK: Jack magic.
KAREN: Honey, you say potato, I say, vodka.
